Below is a listing of published maps for Outpost 2 and explanation of their major differences. This list includes the original maps shipped with the games, maps from the 3 official expansions, and maps created by the Outpost Universe Community.

A wide range of single player maps are available:

  • Tutorial - Maps with associated instructions for learning the game's basic mechanics. Also includes 2 sandbox levels, one for each colony.
  • Campaign - Series of maps that must be completed sequentially. Typically each map is more difficult than the last. Technology between maps is usually retained and does not have to be researched again. The original campaigns have associated mission briefings and novella chapters to develop a rich plot alongside gameplay.
  • Colony Game - Standalone single player map. Typically, they start from a small, undeveloped colony or expedition and require the player to play through the end of a lengthy objective such as launching a starship or obtaining a substantial population.

The following are the basic types of multiplayer maps:

  • Last One Standing (LoS) - Players start with a small pre-built base and fight to the last man. This can also be played with teams (alliances).
  • Land Rush - Similar to Last One Standing except players start with an expedition of vehicles and pick a location to found their colony.
  • Space Race - Players compete to be the first one to complete a colony ship.
  • Midas - The players compete to collect the most minerals in a set amount of time. Rare metals count for more points than common metals.
  • Resource Race - Players compete to obtain a fixed goal of both common and rare metals. First to the goal wins.
  • Survival (SRV or SURV) - Players cooperatively play against external factors to launch a starship. Typically the blight and an AI opponent pressure the players. Each player cannot contribute to another player's starship, so usually one player will focus on starship construction while the others fight the AI opponent.
  • Peacekeeper AI - Some maps include a computer player strategically placed between opponents. In order for the opponents to engage each other, they must first destroy or move through the hostile AI territory. This naturally allows players extra time to build up their colonies before an engagement. Typically the AI will not directly attack the other players, but will defend itself when engaged.

Multiplayer maps can be adjusted to suit an intended style of play and the varying experience level of the players.

On some maps, checking Morale Steady, Day/Night, or Disasters will affect the game play in unrelated ways such as changing the behavior of the AI. See specifics about these maps for details.

  • Morale Steady - Checking this keeps morale at 75 out of 100 for all colonies for the entire game. With steady morale, there is no reason to research or construct morale specific building such as residences, recreation facilities, etc. With steady morale, medical centers can still extend the life of colonists.
  • Day/Night - Checking this allows for a day/night cycle. If the blight is present, during night-time it will expand slower. With night enabled, vehicles with their headlights off become more difficult to spot by opponents.
  • Disasters - Checking this allows natural disasters to occur. This is often left unchecked to make gameplay more balanced.
  • Starting Vehicles - Adding starting vehicles gives each player a starting number of laser or microwave lynx, up to a maximum of 12. Some games modify the starting vehicles to not be available or to provide vehicles besides lynx.

Each map requires a .MAP file and a DLL file to play. The map file lays out the basic terrain and the DLL contains the scenario information. Each map file can support multiple different scenarios with each scenario having its own dll. Maps can also contain a separate tech tree file to customize the technology.

Map sizes below are listed as size in tiles with horizontal first and vertical second. Some maps feature wraparound from Eastern to Western side and vice-versa. No map will allow wraparound from North to South. The largest map size is 512 x 256 tiles.


Single Player Maps

Each Eden and Plymouth campaign map has a separate page containing mission briefings, objectives, and storyline. Each campaign can be played on a different difficulty level: easy, medium, and hard.


Each colony map can be played on a different difficulty level: easy, medium, and hard. Colony maps are intended to take significantly longer to play than an individual campaign map.


Multiplayer Maps

Below is an alphabetical listing of multiplayer maps. In order to play a multiplayer map, all players must have the same version of the map. To add a new map to your copy of Outpost 2, simply drop the required files into the root directory of your Outpost 2 install and restart the game. Typically a new map will contain a new .DLL file and possibly and new .MAP and/or new .txt (tech tree) file as well.
