The original in game videos for Outpost 2 were encoded using the Indeo Codec at resolution 320x240p. The Indeo Codec is not included on modern operating systems and is no longer in active use. It must be installed to view the original videos in game. Additionally, modern versions of Windows no longer enable the Indeo Codec by default due to security exploits that were not fixed.

Outpost 2 is capable of playing videos re-encoded without using the Indeo codec. In game videos may be updated to newer formats and used. The video codec itself is interchangeable and any desired codec can be used for the video stream, so long as the client system includes that codec.
It has also been discovered that the built-in player is actually based around the Video for Windows feature of Windows 3.x and Windows 95, and as such any new codec must have a “Video for Windows” compatible codec for Outpost 2 to recognize the video stream.
