Working With Saved Games
From OPU Wiki
This page covers basic techniques for manipulating Outpost 2 Saved Game files. There is no programming or editing of the files involved.
To store more than 10 games
Sometimes the limit of 10 games just isn't enough.
If you are willing to move some files around, you will be able to give yourself an infinite number of "sets" of 10 slots each. You can then manually exchange these sets for each other by moving files on your hard drive.
To start, locate the outpost 2 folder on your hard drive.
There will be 11 files somewhere in this folder labeld SGAME0.op2, SGAME1.op2, etc. from 0 through 10 (There will always be these 11 files, no matter how many of your slots are used). These are the files in which outpost 2 stores your saved games. The easiest way to find them is to sort the folder by file type (View -> Arrange Icons By -> Type), which will bunch them all together in one place. Make sure not to confuse them with the .vol files, which are nearby and have the same icon.
The important thing to remember when working with these files is that they must all stay together if they are to be used, that is, if one saved game file is missing, none of the rest will work.
Make a new folder with a label describing which saved games it will contain. I personally prefer very descriptive labels such as "Plymoth Campaign Easy", or "Eden Starship Colony Game Hard" so that I will easily be able to see later what they are. Important: Only use one folder for each set of 11 files, otherwise you will just end up getting two or more sets mixed up with each other, and you will have to go to the trouble of figuring out which identical looking files go with which before you can use any of them.
Now move ALL of the SGAME files into this new folder, either by clicking and dragging, or cut/pasting. I am going to refer to these as "archived" games, since they are being stored in such a way that you can't use them.
Now open Outpost 2. If you open the Load menu, you will see that the save slots are all empty and ready for you to use again.
If you want to restore those saved games that you archived, copy/paste them back into the Outpost 2 folder (You can simply move them, but I suggest Copy/Paste because that way you will still have the archived set untouched). Remember: When you copy an archived set into the Outpost 2 folder, it will replace the current set, so if you want to keep the current set you should first archive it using the method described above.
Additional Tips
- These sets of archived files can be transfered from one computer to another, allowing you to carry progress made on one computer over to any other computer running Outpost 2. Remember always that one set of saved games replaces the existing set entirely, so if the computer you are transferring the saved games to already has saved game you want to keep, you should archive them using the method above before you move in the games from the other computer.
- I suggest creating one big folder to store all your folders of archived games, and if appropriate maybe subdivide it into further folders such as "Eden", "Plymoth", "Campaign", "Colony", etc. to keep things more organized.
- If you find yourself swapping out these saved game sets frequently, you can create a shortcut to your Outpost 2 folder and put it in the same place where you store your archived games. This will make swapping them out much faster.
