Communications Report
Incoming chat messages are shown in green. Red messages are from your Savant computer. The number at the beginning of each message indicates the time mark at which the event occurred. The current time mark is displayed at the top of the display. You may select some red messages to make the Detail Pane and click JUMP to center the Detail Pane on the location to which the message refers. (Pressing the <Spacebar>, even when this display is not showing, will take you to the location of the latest message, if appropriate.) Messages to which you may jump include:
- Your vehicles or structures are under attack or have been destroyed.
- Your vehicles have completed a task, or were unable to complete a task. These tasks include repairing, bulldozing, building structures, building Tubes or Walls, and surveying Mining Beacons.
- Your factories have completed production or your labs have completed a research project.
- A disaster has occurred or is expected, or the Blight is approaching the colony.
- Reinforcements have arrived.
The ALLIES/CHAT button, available only in multiplayer games, takes you to the display shown below. The up and down arrow buttons scroll you through the message list if you have a large number of messages.
This display, available only in multiplayer games, allows you to select which of your opponents will receive your chat messages, and with which opponents you will ally. When you ally with someone, four things happen. First, your vehicles will not fire on theirs unless you specifically order it. Second, they will be able to see all of the mining beacons that you have surveyed. Third, they will always be able to see your vehicles in their Mini-Map, even if the vehicles have the lights turned out and are in the dark. Finally, they will be able to see the status lights on your structures, so they will know which of your structures are Active, Idled, and Disabled.
NOTE: If you ally with another player, it does not mean that they are allied with you.
Space Reports
These two displays report the status of your space program. The Satellites display, which appears when you press the Space Report button, indicates the type and status of each satellite you have in orbit. (At the beginning of the game, the only satellite in orbit is the disabled Communications Satellite, which cannot be repaired.) The STARSHIP button calls up the Starship display, which reports on the status of each starship component - either Researched or In Orbit. The STARSHIP button is not available until you have begun your space program. The SATELLITES button returns you, of course, to the Satellites display.
Game Options
The Game Options display gives you controls for the operation of the game.
- MISSION OBJECTIVES shows you the Mission Objectives display.
- ONLINE MANUAL opens the help file for Outpost 2. In single-player games, this button will pause the game, allowing you to look at the online manual without concern about the progress of your game. However, in multiplayer games, play will continue normally, so use this button with caution.
- PREFERENCES shows various game settings you may change, including music, sound effects, game speed, etc.
- LOAD GAME allows you to load any previously saved game. (Available only in single-player games.)
- SAVE GAME allows you to save the current game in progress. (Available only in single-player games.)
- END MISSION allows you to leave the current game. You will have varying options, which depend on whether you are playing a single-player or multiplayer game.
